At Ocean Fresh Seafoods our goal is to showcase the best possible picks from the sea and deliver our customers the best seafood in Canberra.

Our friendly staff are always willing to pass on their knowledge, assisting you in picking the right seafood for your occasion and providing cooking suggestions if you’re a little stuck for inspiration.

Each week we stock a large variety of fresh whole fish, fish fillets, cooked and green prawns, oysters, live and cooked crabs and lobsters, scallops, mussels and smoked products just to name a few. We also have a wide range of frozen products to choose from.

Fish Fillets

The majority of the fish at Ocean Fresh is bought at the Sydney Fish Markets each week and handpicked by our own management team. Depending on the season and recent weather conditions, we aim to have a wide selection of fresh fillets available each day. Our team of filterers cut the fish on a demand basis so you can be assured that the fish is of the freshest and highest quality.

Tuna

Tuna is an incredibly nutrient-dense food. It’s rich in high quality protein and an excellent source of important nutrients such as the minerals selenium, magnesium, and potassium; not to mention the B vitamin complex, and of course, the marvellous omega-3 essential fatty acids.

At Ocean Fresh we personally hand pick our tuna each week from the Sydney Fish Markets, before purchasing we test for freshness and avoid fish that may have any bruising to ensure the best quality tuna is on offer.

For best results, store tuna steaks in plastic wrap or place in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days. Sashimi-grade tuna, to be eaten raw, should be consumed within 24 hours of purchase.

Tuna can be prepared a variety of ways: poached, pan-fried, stir-fried, baked or barbecued. The firm flesh holds together well in soups, curries and casseroles and can be cubed for kebabs. Like any fish it will quickly become dry if overcooked and its rich, meaty texture means it is excellent served rare.

Marinara

At Ocean Fresh we make our own marinara mix which is full of plump and juicy seafood. You will find a mix of calamari, green peeled prawns, baby octopus, boneless white fish and capsicum making this an easy and versatile meal for the whole family. Our marinara mix can easily be added to a pizza, pasta sauce, risotto, paella – let your imagination run wild!

Oysters

Ocean Fresh stock Sydney Rock and Pacific Oysters which are freshly shucked and delivered daily to ensure you are getting the best quality product available.

Oysters contain a whole raft of Vitamins, including C, D, B1, B1, B2 and B3. In terms of valuable minerals, if you eat just four medium-size oysters every day, you’ll get the recommended daily allowances of calcium, copper, iodine, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus and zinc.

There is a difference between Sydney Rock and Pacific Oysters, being, Pacific Oysters are larger in size and Sydney Rock Oysters are smaller, softer and sweeter in taste. Both varieties can be eaten numerous ways, naturally, dressed up with a vinegaret, cooked with a topping such as mornay or Kilpatrick, steamed or baked.
Once opened, Oysters should be stored below 4ºC and consumed as soon as possible.

Lobster

At Ocean Fresh, we typically stock Eastern Rock Lobsters. These impressive creatures are full of flavour, and when cooked correctly, have delicious moist flesh. Perfect for special occasions, especially a hot Aussie Christmas!

There are a few ways to purchase lobsters, our in store tanks make it easy for you to take home a live lobster, we also have fresh cooked lobsters that are ready to eat and frozen green lobster tails ready for cooking.

To be treated with respect, Eastern Rocklobsters are great for cooking, steam, poach, deep-fry, pan-fry, stir-fry, bake, grill, and barbecue. The firm flesh holds together well during most cooking methods. Undercook, rather than overcook, as they will continue cooking in the residual heat; overcooked lobster will become tough and leathery.

Live lobsters should be consumed as soon as possible after purchase. Place in a container, cover with damp paper or cloth and keep in the warmest part of the refrigerator, which is usually the crisper (optimum 5°C). Wrap cooked Rocklobsters in plastic wrap or place in an airtight container. Refrigerate for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months below -18ºC.

Whole Fish

The majority of whole fish at Ocean Fresh is bought fresh from the Sydney Fish Market each week and handpicked by our own management team. Depending on the season and recent weather conditions, we aim to have a wide selection of whole fish to suit all tasted and budgets ranging from fresh Atlantic Salmon, Red Emperor, Snapper, Coral Trout, Black Fish, Sardines, Yellow Tail, Leather Jackets, and Sand Whiting, to name a few. We have a team of filterers on standby who are more than happy to prepare the whole fish to your liking free of charge.

Green Prawns

Ocean Fresh source the majority of our green prawns, which are typically King Prawns, direct from the fishing fleets in South Australia and Western Australia. When in season we also stock green Tiger Prawns that are caught off the coast of Queensland and Darwin. Green prawns are very versatile and great on the barbecue, in curries, risottos and stir-frys.

Leave Prawns in their shells until just before using them and store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It is always best to buy seafood as close as possible to use, fresh Prawns however, cooked or raw, should keep refrigerated for up to 3 days and frozen for up to 3 months.

Atlantic Salmon

Atlantic Salmon is supplied to Ocean Fresh from the crystal clear waters of Tasmania. This farmed product has a smooth and mild flavour with a delicate texture. Not only does it taste great, it is healthy as well as versatile and can be baked, barbecued, poached, smoked or served raw as sashimi.
Salmon is considered to be one of nature’s super foods. Just 100g of farmed Atlantic salmon contains the same amount of Omega-3 as four kilograms of scotch fillet steak. Omega-3 fatty acids contain anti-inflammatory properties which can reduce the risk of heart disease and arthritis symptoms and may also reduce the risk of some cancers.
At Ocean Fresh we fillet our salmon to keep up with demand, which means that you are getting the best and freshest salmon in town.
Fresh salmon should be kept in the fridge in an air tight container or wrapping and is best eaten within 3 to 5 days after purchase.

Cooked Prawns

Prawns are one of the most popular, versatile and widely available seafood’s worldwide.

When purchased cooked, they are a great eaten as a snack or entree, added to a salad, sandwiched between two pieces of fresh bread or eaten with your favourite dipping sauce.

At Ocean Fresh we take our cooked prawns very seriously and aim to supply our valued customers with the best prawns from around Australia. Due to our industry experience and solid relationships we have access to a large number of trawler fleets who offer us prawns at their freshest and best.

There are a number of cooked prawn varieties that we stock at Ocean Fresh:

Tiger Prawns – a firm texture and salty flavour, the bright red shell with the distinctive tiger stripe makes them very appealing to look at which is why you will find them in many cafes and restaurants.

Crystal Bay Prawns – a Queensland fresh farmed prawn, they are naturally sweet in taste, fine in texture and lighter in colour.

King Prawns – the most popular species of prawn in Australia, due to their rich flavour and moist flesh. They are excellent for display purposes and can reach an impressive size.
